Back-to-Back Breakthrough: Alex Rogers Dominates Gateway for Second Straight Victory

One week ago, Alex Rogers was still searching for the first Cup Series victory of his career.
Now he has two.
And suddenly, he is seven points away from the championship lead.
Rogers followed his breakthrough Darlington victory with a dominant performance at Gateway, starting from the pole, winning Stage 2 and leading a race-high 97 of 180 laps on his way to his second consecutive North Star Racing Cup Series victory.
Cory Mott finished second, 1.362 seconds behind Rogers, while Nic Vasquez recovered from a difficult opening stage to finish third. Joe T Wright and Vince Mitchell completed the top five.
But Rogers wasn’t the only driver leaving Gateway with something to celebrate.
Despite finishing 12th, Steven Carlile collected enough stage points to take over the championship lead by just two points over Vasquez.
Two races into the Chase, North Star Racing has a new championship leader.
And the hottest driver in the series is suddenly right behind him.
🏆 From Winless to Back-to-Back
Darlington was the breakthrough.
Gateway was the statement.
Alex Rogers didn’t simply win his second consecutive race.
He controlled it.
Starting from the pole, Rogers immediately established the No. 21 as one of the fastest cars in the field.
He led 25 of the opening 35 laps before finishing sixth in Stage 1.
Then Rogers took his turn at the front again in Stage 2, winning the stage and collecting another 10 points.
By the end of 180 laps, Rogers had led a race-high 97 laps.
He also recorded the fastest lap of the race at 31.833 seconds, finished with zero incidents and maintained an incredible 2.0 average running position.
When Cory Mott tried to close the gap late, Rogers had enough left.
The margin at the checkered flag was 1.362 seconds.
Darlington: Win No. 1.
Gateway: Win No. 2.
Back-to-back.
Rogers entered Darlington looking for his first career Cup Series victory.
He leaves Gateway looking like a championship contender.
🔥 Mott Nearly Defends Gateway
Cory Mott came incredibly close to doing it again.
The defending Gateway winner entered the race looking to rebound from a difficult Darlington, and the No. 54 immediately returned to form.
Mott finished third in Stage 1 before leading 18 laps in Stage 2 and finishing fifth in the stage.
He remained Rogers’ primary challenger during the closing portion of the race and ultimately finished second.
Mott scored 49 total points, including 14 stage points.
One year after defeating Vasquez by 0.251 seconds at Gateway, Mott came within 1.362 seconds of making it consecutive victories at the track.
He didn’t get the trophy this time.
But after the disappointment of Darlington, the No. 54 looked like a contender again.
👑 Vasquez Recovers From a Difficult Start
Gateway looked like the perfect opportunity for Nic Vasquez to respond after Darlington.
Instead, the race began with another challenge.
Vasquez — who swept both stages and led 104 laps at Gateway last season — finished 11th in Stage 1 and collected no stage points.
Stage 2 wasn’t much better.
He finished 10th and earned only one point.
But the No. 22 refused to let the race get away.
Vasquez steadily worked his way forward during the final stage and eventually climbed all the way to third.
It wasn’t the dominant Gateway performance we saw one year ago.
But considering where the race started, third place represented important damage control.
Vasquez scored 35 total points and now sits second in the championship.
The bad news?
For the first time in this Chase, he isn’t the driver everyone else is chasing.
🏆 Stage 1: Carlile Takes Control
Steven Carlile entered Gateway only three points behind Vasquez.
He wasted no time attacking that deficit.
Carlile led 10 laps and captured the Stage 1 victory, earning the maximum 10 stage points.
Caleb Sheets finished second, followed by Cory Mott, Tyler Krawczyk and Zach Thomas Johnson.
Alex Rogers finished sixth despite leading 25 laps.
Stewart Harding Walker, John Connor, Joe T Wright and Vince Mitchell completed the top 10.
Vasquez finished 11th.
Just 35 laps into the race, the championship battle had already changed.
🏆 Stage 2: Rogers Makes His Move
If Stage 1 belonged to Carlile, Stage 2 belonged to the eventual winner.
Rogers captured the stage victory while continuing to establish himself as the car to beat.
Stewart Harding Walker finished second, followed by Vince Mitchell, Joe T Wright and Cory Mott.
Carlile finished sixth, Joshua Pittman seventh and Tyler Krawczyk eighth.
Zach Thomas Johnson and Nic Vasquez completed the top 10.
With 15 stage points already secured and the fastest car in the field underneath him, Rogers entered the final portion of the race in perfect position.
He didn’t waste it.
⚡ Walker Shows Speed Again
For the second consecutive race, Stewart Harding Walker’s finishing position doesn’t tell the entire story.
Walker scored points in both stages and finished second in Stage 2.
He also led 43 laps, second only to Rogers.
The No. 4 maintained a 2.8 average running position, showing just how strong Walker was for most of the race.
But when the checkered flag flew, he was eighth.
The stage points softened the blow, allowing Walker to score 42 total points despite the finish.
After leading 50 laps at Darlington and another 43 at Gateway, Walker has now led 93 laps over the last two races.
The speed is there.
The next step is converting it into another victory.
📈 Joe T Wright Delivers Again
Joe T Wright is quietly putting together a run.
After finishing fifth at Darlington, Wright followed it with a fourth-place finish at Gateway.
He also scored nine stage points, including a fourth-place result in Stage 2.
Wright didn’t lead a lap, but he didn’t need to.
He kept the car clean, finished with zero incidents and scored 42 total points.
That’s consecutive top-five finishes for the No. 37.
At this point, it isn’t just a good race.
It’s becoming a trend.
📈 Mitchell Returns to the Top Five
Vince Mitchell’s Darlington race lasted only 31 laps.
Gateway was a completely different story.
Mitchell scored a point in Stage 1 before charging to third in Stage 2.
He led three laps and ultimately finished fifth, scoring 41 total points.
The result moved Mitchell up one position in the standings to ninth.
After showing speed before his Darlington disconnect, Gateway finally gave the No. 18 the finish to go with it.
📉 Tough Finish for the New Championship Leader
This might be one of the strangest ways to take over a championship lead.
Steven Carlile was excellent early.
He won Stage 1.
He finished sixth in Stage 2.
He collected 15 stage points.
But the final portion of the race went completely differently.
Carlile finished 12th, six laps down, and scored only 25 race points.
Normally, that would be a major championship setback.
Instead, the stage points he accumulated early proved enormously valuable.
Carlile scored 40 total points and did just enough to move past Vasquez.
He leaves Gateway with 2,168 points.
And for the first time, Steven Carlile is the driver sitting atop this championship battle.
🚂 Difficult Ending for Krawczyk
Tyler Krawczyk started second and looked poised to build on his fourth-place Darlington finish.
Early on, everything was going according to plan.
Krawczyk finished fourth in Stage 1 and eighth in Stage 2, collecting 10 stage points.
But the No. 48 couldn’t make it to the finish.
Krawczyk disconnected after completing 174 of 180 laps and was credited with 11th.
He still scored 36 total points, but with the championship battle tightening at the front, those six missing laps proved costly.
