NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — Short-track racing lived up to its reputation Wednesday night as the North Star Racing Cup Series returned to the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway. After 300 grueling laps filled with tire wear, patience, and plenty of contact, Caleb Sheets emerged victorious, surviving 22 cautions to claim one of the biggest wins of his season.
Sheets controlled the race when it mattered most, leading a race-high 202 laps while sweeping Stage 2 and holding off championship contender Josh L. Stoltz during the closing laps. The victory marks Sheets’ second win of the season and immediately puts the rest of the championship field on notice.
Stage 1: Vasquez Continues Championship Consistency
Championship leader Nic Vasquez wasted no time showing why he sits atop the standings. After qualifying near the front, Vasquez dominated the opening stage, leading 70 of the 77 laps before collecting the Stage 1 victory.
Caleb Sheets remained close behind in second, followed by Josh L. Stoltz, Steven Carlile, and Vince Mitchell, all collecting valuable championship points before the first break.
Although Vasquez appeared to have the strongest early car, the long race still had more than 220 laps remaining.
Stage 2 Belongs to Caleb Sheets
The momentum shifted after the restart.
Sheets steadily worked his way around Vasquez before taking complete control of the race. He led 62 laps during Stage 2 and drove away from the field to earn the stage victory ahead of Josh L. Stoltz and Cory Mott.
The race continued to feature frequent cautions, forcing teams to constantly adjust strategy while managing tire wear on one of NASCAR’s toughest short tracks.
Surviving the Chaos
If there was one word to describe the final stage, it would be survival.
The final stage turned into a battle of patience and survival as 22 cautions slowed the race for an incredible 100 laps. Long green-flag runs were rare, and every restart created another opportunity for drivers to gain—or lose—valuable track position. With passing at a premium, restarts became the deciding factor throughout the night.
Through all of the chaos, Caleb Sheets remained composed.
He led over two-thirds of the race, controlled every restart in the closing laps, and never allowed Josh L. Stoltz or Nic Vasquez the opportunity to mount a serious challenge.
When the checkered flag finally waved after more than two hours of racing, Sheets had completed one of the most dominant performances of the North Star Racing season.

Caleb Sheets earns Driver of the Race honors after leading 202 laps, winning Stage 2, and capturing one of the most impressive victories of the season. On a night where mistakes were everywhere, Sheets stayed calm and rarely put a wheel wrong.
Josh L. Stoltz continued his championship push with another outstanding performance. Second place and valuable stage points allowed him to keep pressure on Nic Vasquez in the standings.
Nic Vasquez may not have won, but another podium finish and a Stage 1 victory helped strengthen his championship lead. His consistency continues to separate him from the rest of the field.
Alex M. Rogers turned in one of his best races of the season, bringing home a fourth-place finish after quietly working his way through the field all night.
Championship Picture
Despite Caleb Sheets celebrating in Victory Lane, the championship fight remains incredibly close.
Nic Vasquez continues to lead the standings with 875 points, maintaining a 19-point advantage over Josh L. Stoltz, who now sits second with 856 points.
Stewart Harding Walker remains third with five victories on the season, while Steven Carlile moved up into fourth following another strong finish. John Connor10 climbed into the top five, while Tyler Belanger slipped back to sixth.
Caleb Sheets’ victory also strengthened his playoff position, moving him further inside the top ten while building momentum heading into the next event.
One of the toughest nights belonged to Zach Thomas Johnson. Mechanical issues ended his race after just 39 laps, resulting in a 20th-place finish. Despite the setback, Johnson remains seventh in the championship standings and will look to rebound next week.
Looking Ahead
North Wilkesboro once again reminded everyone why short-track racing demands patience as much as speed. Tire management, restart execution, and avoiding trouble ultimately decided the race.
With the championship battle tightening and the Chase approaching, every stage point and every finishing position is becoming increasingly important. Nic Vasquez still controls the standings, but Josh L. Stoltz continues to chip away at the lead, while Stewart Harding Walker, Steven Carlile, and Caleb Sheets all have the speed to challenge for the title.
After surviving one of the roughest races of the season, the North Star Racing Cup Series now turns its attention to the next chapter of the championship fight. If North Wilkesboro was any indication, the battle for the Cup is only going to get more intense from here.
