Looking Ahead: The Chase Reaches the Halfway Point in Las Vegas
The Chase has reached its halfway point, and the championship battle heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway tonight for Race 5 of 10. With four Chase races already in the books, the pressure is beginning to build. There are no more opportunities to simply have an off night and make it up later. From this point forward, every race carries enormous championship weight.
The South Point 201 goes green tonight, Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 PM EST. The race is scheduled for 201 laps, with stage points available at Lap 45 and Lap 90.
๐ The Halfway Point
Four races are complete. Five remain after tonight.
That makes Las Vegas a major turning point in the championship.
The opening half of the Chase has already produced plenty of movement, and the most recent race at Kansas showed just how quickly the championship picture can change. Nic Vasquez dominated the night, sweeping both stages and winning the 200-lap race after leading 103 laps.
Now the field heads to a completely different challenge.
Las Vegas has already proven to be one of the most unpredictable stops on the schedule. The previous North Star Racing race at the track featured 19 cautions for 57 caution laps, 10 leaders and 15 lead changes.
With the championship sitting at the halfway point, surviving another chaotic night could be just as important as winning it.
๐ฅ Vasquez Looks to Continue His Run
Nic Vasquez enters Las Vegas with perhaps the most momentum of anyone in the championship fight.
His Kansas performance was nearly flawless. Vasquez won both stages, led 103 of the 200 laps and took the overall victory. He also finished the race with zero incidents.
That performance came at exactly the right time.
Vasquez now has an opportunity to turn his Kansas momentum into another strong Chase result at Las Vegas. But this track has already shown that dominance does not guarantee a clean night.
The previous Vegas race saw Vasquez win after leading 81 laps, making him the defending NSR winner at the track. If he can repeat that performance tonight, he could put himself in an extremely strong position heading into the second half of the Chase.

โ๏ธ Krawczyk Has Vegas Speed
If there is one driver who has already demonstrated that he can dominate Las Vegas, it is Tyler Krawczyk.
During the previous Vegas race, Krawczyk won Stage 1 after leading 34 of the 45 laps. He also led 37 laps during the overall race.
The problem was converting that speed into a finish.
Krawczyk ultimately finished 12th despite spending significant time at the front of the field. That makes tonight’s race particularly interesting for the #48.
The speed is clearly there. The question is whether Krawczyk can put together 201 clean laps and turn that speed into a victory.
At the halfway point of the Chase, a win at a track where he has already shown that kind of pace could be a massive momentum swing.

๐ Saunders Has Already Shown What Is Possible
Zack Saunders also deserves plenty of attention heading into tonight.
In the previous Vegas race, Saunders started 22nd and charged all the way to second. He led 30 laps and finished just 0.927 seconds behind Vasquez.
That performance proved that track position is not necessarily everything at Las Vegas.
If Saunders can avoid starting so deep in the field this time, he could be in position to challenge for the win rather than simply fight his way through the pack.
๐ Ones to Watch
Nic Vasquez
Vasquez is coming off a dominant Kansas victory and has already won the previous NSR race at Las Vegas. He is the obvious driver to watch entering tonight’s race.
Tyler Krawczyk
The #48 was arguably the fastest car in the previous Vegas race for long stretches. A Stage 1 victory and 37 laps led show exactly what Krawczyk is capable of at this track. If he can put the entire race together, he could be a major factor.
Caleb Sheets
Sheets finished second at Kansas after starting 10th, continuing to put himself in position to score valuable Chase points. His ability to stay near the front could become especially important in a race where cautions are likely to create plenty of opportunities.

Stewart Harding Walker
Walker has shown the ability to survive difficult races, and that could be extremely valuable at Las Vegas. He finished fifth at Kansas and sixth in the previous Vegas race, giving him back-to-back strong performances at the two most recent tracks on the schedule.

Zach Thomas Johnson
Johnson remains one of the drivers capable of making a major move in the championship. He finished ninth at Kansas and has consistently been capable of collecting stage points. A strong Las Vegas performance could be exactly what he needs as the Chase reaches its midpoint.

๐ฏ The Key to Las Vegas
Survive the chaos.
The previous NSR Las Vegas race produced 19 cautions and 57 caution laps. That is a massive amount of disruption over 200 laps, and tonight’s 201-lap race could present another test of patience and racecraft.
The stage breaks at Laps 45 and 90 also create important opportunities to collect points, but drivers cannot afford to sacrifice the bigger picture for a few extra positions early in the night.
At the halfway point of the Chase, finishing the race could be just as important as dominating it.

๐ Five Races Down. Five to Go.
Tonight marks the halfway point of the championship.
That changes the urgency for everyone.
There are only five races remaining after Las Vegas, meaning the drivers who have built momentum now have a chance to separate themselves from the field. Meanwhile, anyone who has struggled through the opening four races needs to start making up ground immediately.
There is no room for complacency.
A victory tonight could completely change the momentum of the championship heading into the second half of the Chase. At the same time, a poor result could leave a driver fighting from behind with only four races remaining after tonight.
๐ฎ Our Prediction
Nic Vasquez is the driver to beat.
He enters Las Vegas fresh off a Kansas victory where he swept both stages and led more than half the race. On top of that, he won the previous NSR race at Las Vegas.
But Tyler Krawczyk is the driver who could spoil the party.
Krawczyk has already shown that he has the raw speed to dominate this track. If he can avoid the problems that kept him from converting his previous Vegas performance into a top finish, the #48 could be the driver standing in Victory Lane.
And with the Chase reaching its halfway point, expect everyone to race with the championship in mind.
