One race into the Chase, there is almost nothing separating North Star Racing’s championship contenders.
Nic Vasquez still owns the points lead.
But Steven Carlile is only three points behind.
Zach Thomas Johnson sits 19 back. Caleb Sheets is 22 behind. Stewart Harding Walker is 29 back. Tyler Krawczyk is 40 behind.
And fresh off his first career Cup Series victory, Alex Rogers is seventh — just 41 points from the lead.
Now comes Gateway.
The unique 1.25-mile oval presents a completely different challenge from Darlington. Heavy braking, long straightaways and two distinctly different ends of the racetrack force drivers to compromise. Track position can be difficult to regain, and one poorly timed caution or mistake on pit road can completely change a race.
And if last year’s North Star Racing race is any indication, Gateway could deliver exactly the kind of afternoon capable of shaking up the Chase.

🔥 Cory Mott — The Defending Gateway Winner
There may not be a better place for Cory Mott to get his Chase headed back in the right direction.
Mott won this race one year ago, but it wasn’t easy.
He watched Nic Vasquez dominate much of the event before putting himself in position when it mattered most. Mott led 33 laps and ultimately beat Vasquez to the checkered flag by just 0.251 seconds.
He also finished second in both stages, giving him one of the most complete performances of the entire race.
That history becomes particularly important after a difficult Darlington race in which Mott disconnected after 106 laps and finished 12th.
Before Darlington, the No. 54 had been one of the hottest cars in North Star Racing.
Gateway offers an opportunity to restart that momentum at a track where he already knows how to win.

👑 Nic Vasquez — Gateway’s Dominant Driver Has Something to Prove
Last year’s final result doesn’t tell the story of Nic Vasquez’s Gateway race.
For most of the night, the No. 22 was untouchable.
Vasquez won Stage 1.
Then he won Stage 2.
He led 104 of 160 laps.
He earned the fastest-lap bonus.
And after all of that, he finished second by 0.251 seconds.
That’s unfinished business.
It’s also arriving at exactly the right time.
Vasquez’s Darlington race ended after 155 laps, allowing the championship field to erase nearly all of his advantage.
He still leads the standings with 2,131 points, but Steven Carlile is now only three points behind.
Vasquez doesn’t necessarily need to dominate Gateway again.
But after what happened at Darlington, a repeat of last year’s speed would be extremely well timed.

📈 Steven Carlile — Three Points Away
Three points.
That’s all that separates Steven Carlile from the championship lead.
Carlile responded to a disastrous Daytona with one of his strongest complete races of the season at Darlington.
He finished second in both stages, collected 18 stage points, led 22 laps and finished third.
Now he heads to a track where he finished fourth last year.
Carlile also scored stage points in both segments of that Gateway race, including a fourth-place finish in Stage 1 and seventh in Stage 2.
The No. 81 still hasn’t won this season.
He hasn’t needed to.
Twenty-seven starts have produced eight top fives and 18 top 10s, and that consistency has carried Carlile to within three points of the championship lead.
A strong Gateway race could potentially put him on top.
Why he’s one to watch: Finished fourth here last year and enters Gateway only three points from the championship lead.
🔥 Zach Thomas Johnson — Nobody Is Finishing Better
If Power Rankings are about momentum, Zach Thomas Johnson has plenty of it.
Daytona: 1st.
Darlington: 2nd.
Johnson has gone from needing a late-season spark to becoming one of the central figures in the championship battle.
And Gateway hasn’t been a bad place for him.
Johnson finished sixth here last year after scoring points in both stages.
He was sixth in Stage 1 and fourth in Stage 2 before finishing 4.202 seconds behind Mott.
Now Johnson returns with considerably more momentum.
The No. 45 sits third in the championship, only 19 points from the lead.
Another performance like Daytona or Darlington could move him even closer.
Why he’s one to watch: Coming off consecutive finishes of first and second and scored points in both Gateway stages last year.
⚔️ Caleb Sheets — Another Track Where He Has Led Laps
Caleb Sheets keeps putting himself at the front of races.
Darlington was the latest example.
Sheets won Stage 1, led a race-high 66 laps and finished sixth.
Gateway provides another track where he’s already shown significant speed.
Last year, Sheets led 12 laps in Stage 1 and finished third.
He followed that with another third-place finish in Stage 2 before ultimately finishing third in the race.
Sheets enters this week fourth in the championship standings and only 22 points behind Vasquez.
He’s already shown he can contend at Gateway.
Now he needs to turn that speed into another big Chase result.

🚂 Tyler Krawczyk — Another Opportunity to Keep Rolling
The TK Train got moving again at Darlington.
After difficult races at New Hampshire and Daytona, Tyler Krawczyk finished fourth at Darlington while spending nearly the entire race around the front.
Gateway wasn’t one of his strongest finishes last season, but there were encouraging signs.
Krawczyk finished ninth in Stage 1 and improved to sixth in Stage 2 before eventually finishing 11th.
More importantly, the current version of the No. 48 enters Gateway with considerably more at stake.
Krawczyk is sixth in the championship standings, 40 points behind Vasquez.
Darlington stopped the slide.
Gateway is an opportunity to start climbing.
Why he’s one to watch: Coming off a fourth-place Darlington finish with a championship deficit that remains very manageable.
🏆 Alex Rogers — What Comes After Win No. 1?
For the first time in his Cup Series career, Alex Rogers enters a race as the most recent winner.
Darlington changed the conversation surrounding the No. 21.
Rogers started fifth, scored points in both stages, led 26 laps, recorded zero incidents and drove away from Zach Thomas Johnson to earn his first career North Star Racing Cup Series victory.
Now comes a different challenge.
Can he do it again?
Rogers wasn’t part of last year’s Gateway field, so unlike several of the drivers around him in the championship standings, he doesn’t have a previous result to lean on.
But he does have momentum.
Rogers climbed to seventh in the championship standings after Darlington and now sits only 41 points behind Vasquez.
The first victory answered one question.
Gateway will begin answering the next one:

1. Get the Braking Zones Right
Gateway puts a premium on braking. Drivers who consistently get the car slowed down without abusing the tires or locking a wheel can create opportunities that simply aren’t available elsewhere.
2. Find a Compromise Between Both Ends
Turns 1 and 2 aren’t the same as Turns 3 and 4. A car that feels perfect at one end can be a handful at the other. The best setups will give drivers enough versatility to attack both.
3. Protect Corner Exit
Gateway’s long straightaways make corner exit critical. Losing momentum off the turn can leave a driver vulnerable all the way down the straightaway.
4. Don’t Give Away Track Position
Passing can be difficult when cars are evenly matched. A slow pit stop, speeding penalty or poorly timed strategy decision could cost more than just a few positions.

Look at the standings.
